路得是耶稣家族的祖先之一。她和丈夫原居摩押，即在今天的约旦。她丈夫去世后，路得离开了家乡摩押，跟随岳母拿俄米到以色列谋求生计。拿俄米却一直要求路得留在家乡摩押。路得决意与岳母相依为命，她说：“你往哪里去，我也往哪里去。你在哪里住宿，我也在哪里住宿。你的国就是我的国，你的神就是我的神。你在哪里死，我也在哪里死，也葬在哪里。除非死能使你我相离，不然，愿耶和华重重地降罚与我。”（路得记1：16-18）。这种誓死的坚定使得路得成为世人心中忠贞的代表。 “ruth”一字有贤良孝顺与忠贞的意思，“ruthless”则为反义词。当我们说某人是“ruthless”，就表示他很硬心肠。
