亚伯拉罕是希伯来文。根据旧约的记载，亚伯拉罕原名为“亚伯蘭”，意思是“崇高的父亲”。相传为希伯来人的始祖。因为耶和华立他做多国的父，就把他的名字改为“亚伯拉罕”，意思是“多国之父”。耶和华必使他的后裔繁多，国度从他而立,君王从他而出。耶和华令一百岁的亚伯拉罕和他九十岁的妻子撒拉生下第一个儿子以撒.因为以撒,亚伯拉罕成為了以色列之父。(创世记22:2)耶和华为了试验亚拉伯罕的信心，要他把自己的独生子以撒献为燔祭。亚伯拉罕遵從耶和华的命令，但在最后一刻, 耶和华派天使阻止了燔祭，挽救了以撒的生命。亚伯拉罕因此稱為信心之父。
