The root of the matter (Job 19:28)

bible verse

“If you say, ‘How we will hound him, since the root of the trouble lies in him’… (Job 19:28)

meaning

The root of the matter is the cause.

origin and application

Job was in deep suffering having lost his properties and children overnight. However, his dire situation did not win him sympathy from his friends, who attributed the root of his sufferings to his sins.
Job’s famous dialogues with his three friends, documented in the Book of Job, become a useful resource for learners to appreciate its tight structure, cogent arguments and reasoning. This book – along with the Book of Proverbs, Psalms and Ecclesiastes – belongs to wisdom literature which is a genre that focuses on moral teaching in the form of fables, dialogues etc.

example
