The Bible has been the most influential text in all of Western culture. It's difficult to understand medieval or early modern or much of modern literature without knowing it...

The lion and the lamb should lie down together (Isaiah 11:6)

bible verse

“The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.”

meaning

origin and application

The above is a prophecy of the coming of Christ. Wolves prey on lambs, yet they should lie down together in harmony when Christ comes to rule in the future. This wolf-lamb duo gradually evolved into the more popular saying of the lion and the lamb. When people speak of the lion and the lamb lying down together, they are referring to a time of peace and harmony.
