“그가 더하시리라”란 뜻을 지닌 히브리어 יוֹסֵף (Yosef)에서 유래되었습니다. 성경에 몇몇의 요셉이 나오는데 구약성경에는 야곱과 라헬의 11번째 아들의 이름이 요셉이었고 이는 “주님이 또 다른 아들을 나에게 더하시길”이란 뜻을 가집니다. 야곱이 요셉만 사랑하는 것을 질투하여 그의 형제들이 그를 이집트로 보냈는데, 후에 그는 이집트 바로 왕의 조언자가 됩니다. 신약성경에서 동명인으로는 예수님의 아버지인 요셉과 비밀스럽게 예수님의 제자가 되어 예수님의 시신을 그가 소유한 무덤에 장사하도록 돈을 기부했던 아리마데의 부자 요셉이 있습니다.
