“비둘기”란 뜻을 지닌 히브리어 יוֹנָה (Yonah)에서 유래되었습니다. 구약시대에 요나는 선지자였습니다. 하나님의 말씀이 요나에게 임하여 큰 성 니느웨로 가서 복음을 전하라고 하십니다 왜냐하면 니느웨 사람들의 악행이 주님에게까지 전해졌기 때문입니다. 처음에 요나는 불순종하여 대신 다시스로 향합니다. 그 후에 하나님은 요나를 삼키도록 큰 물고기를 보냅니다 그리고 그는 물고기 뱃속에 3일 동안 갇히게 됩니다. 그 이후에 그는 하나님께 순종하여 니느웨로 갑니다.
