근본적으로 히브리어인 יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan)에서 나온 그리스어 Ιωαννης (Ioannes)에서 유래된 영국 풍으로 만들어진 라틴 이름 Iohannes입니다. “하나님은 은혜로우시다”란 뜻을 의미합니다. 이 이름을 가진 신약에 나오는 유명한 두명의 인물은 세례요한과 사도요한 입니다. 세례요한은 선지자이자 예수님의 선구자였습니다. 모든 의를 실현시키기 위해, 예수님은 그 자신에게 세례를 베풀도록 요한에게 요구하십니다. 사도요한은 예수님의 가장 어린 제자였고, 그는 요한복음을 썼으며 망명 중에는 요한계시록을 집필했습니다.
