히브리어 יַעֲקֹב (Ya’aqov)에서 기원되었습니다. “대체자”란 뜻의 야곱의 이름처럼 같은 기원에서 유래되었다고 믿어집니다. (자세한 내용은 야곱을 참조하세요) 신약성경에서 야고보는 예수님의 12제자 중에 한 사람이었고 또한 사도요한의 형제입니다. 그와 요한 그리고 베드로는 영광스럽게 변모되신 예수님의 형상을 본 증인으로써 유일하게 예수님께 선택 받은 3명의 사도들입니다. 마가복음에서 예수님은 천둥의 아들들이란 뜻인 “Boanerges”란 이름을 그들에게 지어주십니다. 바울은 갈리디아서에서 이 세사람을 교회의 기둥으로써 간주합니다. 신약성경에 보면, 예수님은 야고보라고 불리는 형제가 있습니다.
