아벨은 “숨”이라는 뜻을 의미하는 הֶבֶל (Hevel) 또는 הָבֶל (Havel)란 히브리 이름에서 기원되었습니다. 구약성경에 따르면, 아벨은 아담과 이브의 자녀로 가인 다음으로 태어났습니다. 가인이 농사일을 할 때에 아벨은 양떼를 지켰습니다. 시기심을 못 이겨, 하나님이 아벨의 제사만 좋아하시는 것을 보고 가인은 아벨을 살인합니다. 이 사건이 인류역사의 첫 번째 살인으로 기록됩니다.
