The Bible has been the most influential text in all of Western culture. It's difficult to understand medieval or early modern or much of modern literature without knowing it...

It's not that it's impossible to read some writers without a Biblical background, but that you would miss a whole dimension to their work.

Fall by the wayside

Parable
그림 저작권: V.

“And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: ” 주께서 많은 것을 그들에게 비유로 일러 말씀하시기를 “보라, 씨 뿌리는 자가 뿌리러 나가서 씨를 뿌렸는데 어떤 씨는 길가에 떨어지니 새들이 와서 먹어 버렸고.”

At first he did well, but after a few setbacks he fell by the wayside.
