기원과 적용

장자권은 가정의 큰 아들이 다른 어린 동생들보다 두배 이상의 유산을 소유할 수 있도록 부여한 유대 전통제도입니다. 이러한 권리는 큰 아들에게 타고난 특권이 있기 때문에 장자권이라고 불려집니다. 이삭의 아내 리브가가 야곱과 에서라는 쌍둥이를 낳았을 때, 두 아이가 태중에서 싸우고 있었습니다. 결국엔 에서가 먼저 태어났고, 야곱이 그 이후에 나왔습니다. 이 구절에서 보면 두 형제간의 싸움이 끝나지 않았음을 볼 수 있습니다. 후에 나온 야곱이 형에게 부여됐던 장자권을 빼았으려고 노력합니다. 어느날, 에서가 사냥에서 돌아왔을 때, 야곱에게 붉은 죽을 좀 달라고 요구합니다. 야곱은 기회를 얻었고, 그는 에서에게 붉을 죽을 주는 대신 장자권을 팔라고 묻습니다. 에서는 너무나 배가 고파서 동생의 권유에 응하고 말았습니다.
