人は自分の罪のゆえに死ぬ。だれでも酸いぶどうを食べれば、自分の歯が浮く。(エレミヤ書31章30節)

意味

酸っぱいぶどうは、聖書の中で罪深い行為を指すように意図されています。イソップ物語には、本当は欲しいのだけれども手にいれることができないものを負け惜しみに見くびって酸っぱいぶどうだと決めつけてあきらめる話があります。

起源と適用

イソップ物語の一つのお話ー酸っぱいぶどう(きつねとぶどう):一匹のきつねがぶどうの木のぶどうの房を見つけます。きつねはそのぶどうを採ろうとするのですが、届きません。がっかりしたきつねは、「どうせ、酸っぱいに決まっているさ。」と言いました。

慣用句としての「酸っぱいブドウ」が、偶然にも、イソップ(紀元前620-560)と同時代に生きた、預言者エレミヤ(紀元前620-580)によって書かれた旧約聖書に類似しているのは興味深いことです。主はエレミヤに言われる…「人は自分の罪のゆえに死ぬ。だれでも酸いぶどうを食べれば、自分自身の歯が浮く」
