旧約聖書に書かれた時代、サムソンという強い男がいました。その頭髪は彼を牡牛のように強くしていたのです。だれも、その強さが長い頭髪からくるとはしりませんでしたが、ある日サムソンの愛人デリラが裏切ってその秘密を敵ペリシテ人に漏らしてしまいます。ペリシテ人は彼を夜眠らせ、七つの束に結んだその髪を剃り落としてしまいます。力が去ったあと、敵はサムソンの目をくりぬき、青銅の鎖でつないで、牢獄に入れました。牢屋でサムソンの髪の毛は再び伸び、力もまた帰ってきました。ペリシテ人への報復に、サムソンは宴会場の柱を倒し、ペリシテ人と共に犠牲になって死にました。

サムソンの強さは歴史に残り、その名前は様々な意味を持つようになりました。サムソンポストというのは船の竜骨、甲板や船底を支える強い柱のこと、または、重量のあるブロックを運ぶ滑車のついた動く柱のことです。　サムソンの髪はいろいろな育毛促進センターのブランド名になっています。サムソンは猛烈な強さを持った男の代名詞なのです。
