現代社会において、金婚式は結ばれた男女が、結婚してから50周年経った時に祝う日となっています。聖年という概念は旧約聖書時代にさかのぼります。神様はイスラエル人に種を6年まいた後、地を休ませるよう言われました。この安息日が7回、そしてそれをさらに7回なので49年経った後に何を育てても良いと言われました。なぜならこの５０年目が聖年だったので、人々はそれぞれの畑にもどり、畑で育った物だけを口にしたのです。
