今日その慣用句は食欲を満たす、という意味になっていますが、本来はその人の心を満たすという意味です。キングジェームスバージョンでは現在この慣用句は「eat to their soul’s content」(※キングジェームスヴァージョンの公式な和訳はありません)と表されています。しかし1970年代に出版されたニューインターナショナルバージョンの箴言では「食べてその食欲を満たす」と言う表現が現在の主流になっています。この箴言は正しい者は彼らの精神的な欲求の満たしを神の言葉をもって集中するが、悪い者はその物質的な欲求をさらに求めるが、それは決して満たされる事はありません。
