根據圣經《創世記》的記載，亞當是人類的始祖。上帝在開天辟地，為地球預備所需資源，創造了珍禽異獸后，第六天才創造亞當，好讓他能從地上獲取所需的供應。 亞當是希伯來文，意思為「土地人」。上帝用地上的土做亞當，把生氣吹進他的鼻孔里，亞當就成了活的人。上帝創造了人類的始祖后亞當和他的配偶夏娃后，人類在地上繁衍后代。因此，son of Adam泛指人類，或特別指向男性。 Son of Adam 這諺語見于英國文學著作。在納尼亞傳奇一書中，著名英國作家C.S. Lewis劉易斯就把書中的四位主角稱為sons of Adam 和daughters of Eve.
