耶穌被釘死在十字架上，并且在死后的三天復活。在他死前，曾告訴他的門徒將“有能力、有大榮譽會和他駕著天上的云降臨”。這就是末世時主耶穌基督要再來進行審判的時候。不過不同的是，我們不能預計“主再來”（Second Coming）的日子，因為“人子只有在你不期待他到來的時候降臨”。（馬特福音書24：44）耶穌也曾警告人們說，要像房子的主人知道有盜賊會來，所以要看管好房子那樣的準備好這一天的到來。在文學領域，關于“主再來”（Second Coming）的主題經常成為詩人和作家的靈感泉源。其中最著名的要數諾貝爾文學獎詩人威廉·勃特勒·葉芝William Butler Yeats。他在1920年11月所創的詩作正是以The Second Coming 為題。
