路得是耶穌家族的祖先之一。她和丈夫原居摩押，即在今天的約旦。她丈夫去世后，路得離開了家鄉摩押，跟隨岳母拿俄米到以色列謀求生計。拿俄米卻一直要求路得留在家鄉摩押。路得決意與岳母相依為命，她說：“你往哪里去，我也往哪里去。你在哪里住宿，我也在哪里住宿。你的國就是我的國，你的神就是我的神。你在哪里死，我也在哪里死，也葬在哪里。除非死能使你我相離，不然，願耶和華重重地降罰與我。”（路得記1：16-18）。這種誓死的堅定使得路得成為世人心中忠貞的代表。 “ruth”一字有賢良孝順與忠貞的意思，“ruthless”則為反義詞。當我們說某人是“ruthless”，就表示他很硬心腸。
