挪亞,又稱“諾亞”或“諾厄”,源於希伯來語,意為“安息”或“安慰”。聖經舊約記載,挪亞在世時,地上滿是罪惡,道德淪亡,耶和華後悔造人在地上,要將人和走獸,並昆蟲,以及空中的飛鳥,都從地上除滅。唯有挪亞是個義人,在當時世代是個完全人,在耶和華面前蒙恩,耶和華吩咐挪亞說要他造一隻船,船裡要有房間,船內外要塗上焦油,這條大船便稱為“挪亞方舟”或“方舟,足以保護他和他的家人以及地上凡有血氣的各樣活物躲避大洪水。 洪水過後,神與挪亞、挪亞的後裔、並一切從方舟裡出來的活物以彩虹立約,將來不再被洪水滅絕,也不再有洪水毀壞地了。這便是“彩虹之約”。
