挪亞，又稱“諾亞”或“諾厄”，源於希伯來語，意為“安息”或“安慰”。聖經舊約記載，挪亞在世時，地上滿是罪惡，道德淪亡，耶和華後悔造人在地上，要將人和走獸，並昆蟲，以及空中的飛鳥，都從地上除滅。唯有挪亞是個義人，在當時世代是個完全人，在耶和華面前蒙恩，耶和華吩咐挪亞說要他造一隻船，船裡要有房間，船內外要塗上焦油，這條大船便稱為“挪亞方舟”或“方舟，足以保護他和他的家人以及地上凡有血氣的各樣活物躲避大洪水。洪水過後，神與挪亞、挪亞的後裔、並一切從方舟裡出來的活物以彩虹立約，將來不再被洪水滅絕，也不再有洪水毀壞地了。這便是“彩虹之約”。
