年輕的大衛和巨人歌利亞之間的交戰，最初被認為是一場弱者與強者之間的懸殊較量。但這名后來成為以色列國王的年輕人，憑著他對上帝的信心,最終贏了這場戰斗。 當時非利士已經集結軍隊準備攻打以色列，歌利亞就是非利士軍的一員,以色列的士兵都很怕他。一天大衛聽到歌利亞正公然向以色列軍隊挑釁，為穩定軍心，大衛自願迎戰歌利亞。 大衛對歌利亞說：「你來攻擊我靠的是刀槍和銅戟，而我攻擊你是以萬能的上帝之名。今天我將把非利士人的屍體奉獻給鳥兒們，讓全世界都知道以色列有個神能讓他的軍隊在不用刀槍的情況下戰勝敵人。戰爭的勝利必然是屬于上帝的，他會幫助我們打敗你們。」 交戰開始，歌利亞逐漸向大衛逼近。大衛從袋子里掏出一塊石子，將它擲向歌利亞的額頭。石子射穿了歌利亞的頭盔，他面朝下倒在了地上。大衛拿起歌利亞的刀，割下了他的頭。眾非利士人看到他們討戰的勇士死了，便開始逃跑。以色列軍隊乘勝追擊，一舉殲滅了非利士軍，并占領了他們的營地。 David and Goliath后來常用于比喻那些以弱勝強的戰爭或競賽。例如，在球賽中，兩隊強弱懸殊，便會被形容為大衛對歌利亞的賽事(a match between David and Goliath)。
