這句諺語表示的是一個人應該為自己的罪狀承擔被懲罰的後果。如果一個人殺了另外一個人，那麼這個兇手將要為此償命。這種懲罰最早在《出埃及記》的舊約中有所記載。上帝制定了法律並透露給了先知摩西。這法律是這樣寫的：“But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.” 同樣的諺語在新約中再次出現，但這次的解釋與原先版本有很大的不同。在新約中，上帝告訴人們要嘗試善待自己的敵人，而不是瑕疵必報。新約上是這樣描述這個諺語的：“Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.” But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person.
