When the blind are leading the blind, the people in charge of something don’t know anything more than the people they are supposed to lead.
The phrase first appeared in Tyndale’s English translation of the New Testament. When the Pharisees questioned Jesus for not observing rituals and traditions, Jesus, in turn, described them as blind guides – “they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” (Matthew 15:14)
The phrase has evolved into different forms, such as “the bland leading the bland” and “the blond leading the blond”. e leading the blonde”. The latter has a derogatory sense because blondes are depicted as not very clever women in the western culture. It means the stupid leading the stupid.
