The Bible has been the most influential text in all of Western culture. It's difficult to understand medieval or early modern or much of modern literature without knowing it...

Root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10)

bible verse

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (KJV)

meaning

origin and application

Now a common expression, “love of money is the root of all evil” first appeared in Paul’s letter to his devoted follower Timothy. While Paul warns us of the vices that can grow from the love of money, money itself is not to be blamed. It is the love of money, rather than money itself, that should be avoided.
