meaning

Anniversary.

origin and application

Nowadays, when a couple is celebrating their golden jubilee anniversary of marriage, that means they have been married for fifty years. The concept of jubilee year dates back to the Old Testament times. God asked the Israelites to give the land a rest after six years of sowing, i.e. Sabbath. After seven Sabbaths, i.e. seven times seven years, they are to free the land from growing any products on the fiftieth year, because it is a holy year. Everyone is to return to his own field and eat only what is taken directly from the fields.
