由来と応用

この言葉は、ベニヤミンという町で、あるイスラエル人の側女が辱められた事件の後に、全イスラエルの部族が結束してベニヤミン族と戦った“一人の人のように立ち上がる”という話から来ている。イスラエルの諸部族はベニヤミン族に犯人を引き渡すよう要求したが、耳を貸さなかった。直ちに、ベニヤミンの人々は2万6千人の兵士を動員、その中(他?)には、住民からえり抜きの兵士7百人もあった。彼らはとても老練で、髪の毛一筋をねらって石を投げても、その的をはずすことはなかった。

髪の毛一筋とは、非常に小さい場所または短い距離を意味する。通常、誰かが的をほんの少しはずした時、又は僅差で競争に負けた時、「髪の毛一筋の差で逃した」と言う。

ギャングは警察の手から、髪の毛一筋の差で逃げ切った。
