Meaning:
It came from the Hebrew word רְעוּת (re'ut) meaning "friend" and “compassion”. In the Old Testament, Ruth was married to Mahlon, son of Naomi. After the death of her husband, father-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth still remained faithful to Naomi and followed her to Bethlehem where she married Boaz, a relative of her late father-in-law. They were the great-grandparents of the future King David.
